Each year, United Credit Union encourages its young members to apply for the scholarship program from the Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF).
The Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) has changed the “Family Involvement Board (FIB) Scholarship” to the “Warren A. Morrow (WAM) Memorial Scholarship” in celebration of Warren’s life and achievements.
A visionary in the credit union industry and Hispanic community, Warren Morrow passed away unexpectedly in early 2012 at the age of 34.
In partnership with the Iowa Credit Union League, he founded Coopera and helped secure funding for ICUF, including its Individual Development Account program to help low-income families build financial assets. Warren dedicated himself to helping the underserved and was an advocate for empowerment through education and financial advancement.
There are usually two scholarship programs available through the Scholarship Program.
The first is a scholarship for high school students (classified as seniors, preparing to graduate in the year of application to the scholarship).
The nontraditional scholarship is open to any person who is entering or attending an accredited undergraduate, graduate or vocational program.
In the past, a total of $5,750 has been awarded, divided among four high school students and two nontraditional students.
Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 500 words on a different topic each year.
Judging is based on originality, grammar, clarity and meaningful content of the essay. The deadline for applications is normally in early February.
Scholarship rules, regulations, entry forms and applications are available online at Iowa Credit Union Foundation, FIB Scholarship Program.
Interested students should start checking the site for updated scholarship information in the late fall prior to the February application deadline.
Good Luck!
Need help with the cost of higher education?
There are several types of loans available to Iowans at www.studentloan.org.
The site provides comprehensive information about the different ways of paying for colleges, such as the types of financial aid, federal student loans (also known as FAFSA), private student loans and special savings available to you – and much more.
Plus, most if not all the forms you need for your student’s application process are downloadable from the same site.
Before getting started with the loan application, though, you — together with your student — will want to check out Iowa’s College Access Network at www.icansucceed.org.
It’s a handy site to use to assist your student in reaching his or her educational goals.
